Zinsters Take over the City for NYC Zine Weekend
If you haven’t heard, July is international Zine Month. This weekend, July 24th, The NYC Zine Weekend brings zine-related events to the city. Zines (an abbreviation of magazine) denotes a hand-made and self-published magazine, which usually includes mixed-media and can be fiction based, nonfiction based, or a combination of the two. Zines are also known to include illustration and collage. Although their existence goes as far back as the 1930’s, zines made their biggest splash in the 1990’s with the Riot Grrrl Zine.
Here is a list of some of the events occurring around New York City this weekend to honor this art form and platform for self-expression.
July 24th: ABC No Rio hosts the Summer Zinester Potluck at 8:00 pm. Guests are encouraged to bring a dish and share their own zines.
July 25th: Pete’s Candy Store is the site of Pete’s Mini Zine Fest from 2:00 pm to 7:00 pm. Admission is free.
July 26th: Bluestockings Bookstore, Cafe, & Activist Center will host a “Zinester Skillshare & Discussion” from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm. Admission is free.
